Top Ten Environmental Technologies Selected

An article inserted on the website of American “Fun Science” on 7th listed ten technologies for environmental protection, some of which you have heard so long, some of which have just started and some of which sound very “non – mainstream”. The most concerned part is energy development, including 5 technologies in the top 6 rank.

The “Carbonaceous Garbage Turns into Petroleum” technology won the first place. This technology put forward that,at the appropriate temperature and pressure, any carbonaceous material, from animal offal to discarded tires, can be translated into petroleum.

Hydrogen fuel technology ranks the third. Hydrogen fuel cells use hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity, only to produce water, so it is known as the non-pollution fossil fuels substitute. At present, scientists have successfully developed hydrogen-powered fuel cells for notebook computers and other small appliances, some car manufacturers are also actively developing hydrogen fuel cell cars.

“Light Energy Translated into Electricity” technology was ranked fourth. Solar cell was not a novelty any longer.Currently,scientists’researches are focusing on how to further improve the utilization efficiency of sunlight.

The technique of heat energy in ocean was on the fifth. According to the account by the Department of Energy in USA, the energy of sun radiation that ocean all over the world absorbed was equal to two hundred and fifty billion bottles of oil. The energy consumption all-year in USA was equal to seventy-five hundred million bottles of oil. Besides, the temperature difference between different depths in the sea could be used to generate electricity; however, this technology is neither mature nor effective at present.

Tidal power generation is placed on the sixth in the list, which is the old concept at the beginning of last century. Generater is driven by the tidal water which can generate energy, but the current problem is difficult to control, sometimes the tidal water is too small to generate energy.

Apart from energy development, how to reduce pollutant discharge is also the problem the ten technologies focus on settling. The technique of ‘garden in the air’ was on the seventh. It brought forward that setting gardens and planting trees on the top of city buildings could absorb the heat and carbon dioxide, releasing oxygen at the same time. In addition, the plan can also be used to reduce the temperature of buildings in summer and the use of air – conditioners. Finally, “heat island effect” of cities can be released.

Biodegradation Technology ranks eighth. So-called “Biodegradation” is that it makes use of plants or micro-organisms to break down pollutants and toxic substances. One typical example was the use of micro-organisms to eliminate nitrate pollution in the water and the use of certain plants to absorb soil arsenic compounds.

Emissions deep hidden technical ranks ninth. Some person suggested that carbon dioxide can be separated from other pollutants into the abandoned oil wells, reservoirs contained high salt or even undersea. Though it sounds reasonable, scientists doubt about the long term effect and the cost.

The ten main environmental technologies pay attention to not only the “open source”, but also “expenditure reduction”. Desalination technology is second. This technique is to remove the salt and minerals in sea, transformed into can drink water. The statistic of UN shows that till the middle of this century, the shortage of water source may influence the life of one billion pupulation in the world. The desalination technology can solve the diploma of short of water in some areas in the world in some degree. However, this technical problem is the relatively high cost and power consumption. Scientists are studying how to use cheap fuel to make water evaporation to improve efficiency.

The tenth skill is the no paper skill. A repeat usable “electric paper” will take place of the traditional papers. No matter news paper or novels can be showed on the same electric paper to avoid the waste of paper.
